Knowledge Base Jobs Step 11 of 28

Create a job

The full job form explained — title, client, property, dates, effort and who does it.

2 min read For company admin, manager

This is the form you'll use most. Everything on it except the title is optional at creation — you can raise a job in ten seconds and fill in the detail later.

Step by step

  1. Go to Jobs → New job (or use the + New job button on the jobs list).
  2. Title — describe the work plainly, e.g. "Replace kitchen window". This is what everyone sees on the board.
  3. Client — search and pick, or type a new name to create one inline.
  4. Property / Address — search by address or postcode, or enter a new address line 1 + postcode to create it inline.
  5. Priority and Stage — how urgent it is and where it sits in your workflow.
  6. Due date — the deadline. This is what drives overdue alerts.
  7. Estimated effort (hours) — e.g. 24 — and Hours per day. Together these let WorkLane work out how many days the job runs for on the schedule.
  8. Booking date and Slot (Morning / Afternoon / All day) — when you're actually attending.
  9. Assign to — search staff members and pick who's doing it. You can leave this blank and assign later.
  10. Job reference — leave as Auto-generated unless the client has given you their own reference. Add their PO number if you have one; it'll carry through to the invoice.
  11. Additional notes — anything the engineer needs, e.g. "Isolate water supply".
  12. Save.

Due date and booking date are different things. Due date is the deadline you've promised the client. Booking date is the day you're turning up. A job can be booked for Tuesday and due Friday.

Recurring work

If this job repeats — a monthly service, a quarterly inspection — set a Repeat pattern on the form. That creates a recurring series rather than a one-off. See the recurring jobs guide.
