Working with no signal

How WorkLane keeps working in a basement or a field, and what happens to your updates when signal comes back.

1 min read

WorkLane installs as an app on a phone and keeps working when the connection doesn't.

Install it properly

  1. Open WorkLane in the phone's browser and sign in.
  2. Use the browser's Add to Home Screen option.
  3. Open it from the home screen icon from then on — that's what enables offline behaviour.

What works offline

  • Viewing jobs you've already opened, with their details and notes.
  • Posting updates.
  • Taking and attaching photos.

What happens to your work

Updates and photos are queued on the device. When signal returns they sync in the background automatically — you don't have to remember to do anything, and you can close the app in the meantime.

Before heading somewhere with no signal, open the jobs you'll be attending while you still have a connection. That caches the detail you'll need on site.

If something looks stuck

Get back into signal, open the app and leave it in the foreground for a few seconds. If an update still hasn't appeared after that, don't retype it — check the job first, as it's usually synced and you'd be posting a duplicate to a timeline that can't be edited.
